Me suena que vlc puede estar tratando de abrir el archivo antes de que se
baje siquiera un pedacito, se te abre la interfaz de vlc? si se abre, proba
esperando un toque, aprentando el boton de stop y play de nuevo a ver si
agarra...

También podes probar cambiando desde las preferencias vlc por mplayer a ver
que onda...
